• Initial contact is made. Once this happens a confidential meeting is set up to discuss what issues are happening in your work place.
• Start forming an inside committee. The inside committee members are the back bone to the campaign. These leaders update their coworkers as to how things are progressing, answer questions, and they are the contact for their respected department.
• The card signing process is the most vital step. Signing an authorization card/petition gives workers the power to call an election and say, WE WANT A VOICE IN THE WORK PLACE!
• Meetings will be held throughout the campaign. These meetings are essential because they provide employees with an outlet to voice their questions and concerns within a safe and non-judgmental environment.
•Showing union support by wearing buttons, hats, shirts, etc. during the campaign shows the bosses that the workers are done being taken advantage of.
• The Authorization cards are turned in to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and this will start the process for the election. During this time all workers should be showing support proudly for THEIR union.
• Election Day! The NLRB holds a secret ballot election in which neither the union nor the company know which way anyone votes.
• Congratulations the election was a success! This will force the company to the bargaining table to negotiate such things as working conditions, wages, and seniority. Remember, this is the workers' contract and THEY decided what will go into it.
• Winning the first contract completes the organizing process.
• The next step is to maintain the integrity of the contract by holding the bosses accountable.
